Big D, Inc. joins the Chicot Irrigation Family

Greenwood, Miss. – A company that has been a Greenwood institution since 1969 is moving into the future with a new name and expanded agricultural irrigation services.

Big D, Inc., which has been widely known throughout the Southeast for its exceptional center pivot installations and service, has been purchased by Chicot Irrigation, headquartered in Lake Village, Ark.  The two companies have both been authorized Valley Center Pivots dealers.  By combining forces, their new Valley area of responsibility covers most of the state of Mississippi along with the Louisiana and Arkansas Deltas.

Big D owners and brothers Don and Mark Barger will be continuing their work at the new Chicot Irrigation location.  They are delighted with the opportunities this will bring to their customers.

“This will ensure that our customers continue to have quality service as we move forward,” says Don.  “By combining the respective strengths of the two companies, we’re able to offer a broader range of services.”

Although Chicot Irrigation and Big D have competed in the past, the two companies have also had a strong, longstanding respect for one another.  In fact, Big D would occasionally turn to Chicot Irrigation to drill wells for their pivot projects.

Chicot Irrigation’s core competency has always been in well drilling and pumping.  With the incorporation of the Big D office and crews, their center pivots expertise will now be just as strong.  Both Big D and Chicot Irrigation are multi-generation, family owned Delta businesses with customer service their fundamental company value.

“Both companies have had very low employee turnover,” shares Chicot Irrigation President Cory Rowe.  “Our employees are like family.  I firmly believe that they have to care about each other and serve each other for good customer service to even be possible.  Big D’s employees have been here a long time as well.  They have the same central values that we do.  That doesn’t happen by itself.  The Bargers have invested time and energy into creating that culture.”

The Bargers and Rowe understand the absolute reliance farmers have on their ability to be responsive, having learned that from their fathers.

“Being able to help someone who is worried about losing his farm by installing a pivot in time to save his crops is what makes this job matter,” says Mark.  “There’s nothing better than helping someone like that.”

It is this commitment to excellence and to putting the farmer first that makes Big D a strong addition to the Chicot Irrigation family.

Chicot Irrigation was founded in Lake Village in 1954 by Rowe’s grandfather.  Other offices are in Hollandale, Miss., Wilmot, Ark., Delhi, La and now Greenwood, Miss.  The company also installs underground pipe, has a full parts and service department and offers a wide range of irrigation accessories as well as the latest water conservation and technology products.   Chicot Irrigation has been successful in its growth because of its commitment to integrity and responsiveness to farmers’ needs.  More information about Chicot Irrigation can be found at
